Elections

Image
A linkage institution are channels that transfer public opinion into policy change. Voting and the election that it leads to is a great example of a linkage institution because the people voice their opinion by voting and it translates into policy change by the politicians that are put into office through the election. Elections influence people’s political beliefs specifically in the campaigns. A candidate might say something that you agree with even if you do not agree with the party that represents them. I chose to write about the 2016 Presidential election between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Following I will summarize the candidate's views for America and how they intend to make that change if elected Candidate 1: Hillary Clinton is an American politician, affiliated with the Democratic party. She was the first lady from 1993 to 2001, New York Senator from 2001-2009, and Presidential Candidate in 2008 and 2016. Clinton advocates the importance mental health

Media

Image
Media is a linkage institution because it allows politicians and political parties to communicate a message to the general public as well vice versa. Media influences the way that the general public perceives a candidate or political party and can potentially influence if they vote for or against a candidate based off the way they are portrayed by the media. The two news sources that I chose was an article from the Huffington Post and an article from the The New York Times. Both cater to a similar audience, the liberally inclined, generally educated, general public. The current issue that I am looking at through these news sources is sexual assault and misconduct in the media industry and the entire country. The first article is an op ed piece written by Lupita Nyong’o for the New York Times about her interactions with Harvey Weinstein. In the article she explains how the interactions impacted her and how important it is to stay vigilant and speak out to end a cycle of m

Political Parties and Politicians

Political parties link the general public to the government by representing a set of political opinions or actions and influencing policy and elections. A linkage institution is a structure that connects the people to the government, they include elections, political parties, interest groups, and the media. Political parties are important to linkage institutions because they directly represent the general public’s interests through policy and leadership. The political party I chose to write about is the Democratic party. I chose to write about this party because it is one that I most strongly associate myself and my beliefs with and although it is hard to fully agree with everything a political party says the democratic party aligns with many of my political beliefs. The Democratic party beliefs in supporting an economy that benefits as many people as possible, equal education, addressing climate change through promoting clean energy, working towards equality for all individu

Interest Groups

The issue I chose to focus on for my interest group research was immigration. I selected is immigration because it is extremely relevant today and affects lives of  not only Americans but people around the world. Immigration is a topic that people have many different views on because it is such a large issue but these views can for the most part be boiled down into two main categories: pro legal immigration and anti legal immigration. Members of the pro immigration often believe that immigrants are people that are in need of help and it is our duty as people who live in a world power country to help them. Members that do not support immigration often argue that immigrants hurt our economy and before we can help them we must ensure that our country is at its most stable. Politically there are interest groups that represent both of these viewpoints. To get the full picture I looked at both a liberal and conservative interest group that focused on immigration. Liberal M
